Wesley could not do the work of God if it weren’t for the people of Wesley giving generously. Giving is a central facet of Christian life. Financial giving (or tithing) is the lifeblood of any church, but is also a spiritual act, an act of worship, in that it is a response to God’s grace and love towards us (2 Cor 8:7,8). Our work is an effort to serve our Father in all things, and one of the primary ways in which we serve God is to give God our “firstfruits” (2 Cor 9:7Prov 3:9). We should give in proportion to what we have been given (Dt 16:16,17), and give sacrificially (Lk 21:1-4). Commitment to God and generous giving are closely related (Ex 35:21), but God does not expect us to give more than we can, indeed giving a little is better than nothing (Jn 6:8,9), since in the end it is ultimately the state of one’s heart that counts. We call our members to give, not by meeting some obligatory percentage, but gladly sacrificing for the sake of the gospel because Jesus sacrificed for us, and all we have is His. “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor 9:7). As a church, Wesley also gives, in that we allocate ten percent of our annual income to mission expenditure.

During each service, offering bags are passed around for people to give financially. The offering bags are intended for cash, Planned Giving envelopes and other envelopes for specific contributions. We encourage people to use a tithing method which allows for consistent giving and good financial planning for both the giver and the church, whilst taking inflation into account. This can be done through the Planned Giving Scheme, whereby one is given twelve marked envelopes – one for each month – into which you place your monthly tithing in cash or cheque form. As a similar alternative, one may set up a monthly stop/debit order, which would again allow for greater giving consistency and therefore better financial planning on both sides.

We encourage people not to allocate their regular tithes to a specific item or expenditure. A church needs regular income to function and meet its budget, and it is the role of the leaders of a church to decide where money is spent. A congregation should trust their leaders with that role, whilst expecting financial accountability and transparency in return. If you do wish to contribute to a specific item or expense over and above your normal tithe, we’d gladly accept your gift with gratitude, but do please make sure you speak to one of the executive members about it first.
